National Institute of Health (NIH) Grant - University of Rochester
|
|
The University of Rochester works in collaboration with the U.S. Air Force in Suicide
Prevention efforts. By evaluating the prevention programs, outcomes, and continuously
studying the underlying risk factors, intervention programs are created or revamped in hopes
of producing a systemic intervention approach aimed at changing social norms about seeking help
and promoting mental health. Working with the NIH grant funding, data gathering and analysis
techniques are used to help identify critical points associated with suicide in hopes of creating
a better prevention strategy.
|
IMS’ direct contribution is to assist with the following:
|
|
1) Trend analysis of rates of suicide and related outcomes
2) Understanding relative risk of suicide and related outcomes
3) Defining population characteristics
4) Identifying historical changes in occupation, location, financial, or marital status
5) Identifying critical changes in health status
|
Results to date:
|
|
1) After the implementation of a broadly based, community level suicide
prevention program in the U.S. Air Force, there were fewer suicides.
2) The ongoing program also reduced the rates of other adverse outcomes
that share similar underlying risk factors.
